    Spotlight Speakers.


    Dr. Karen Weller Swanson is a teacher at Timberview Middle School in Colorado. As an academic and practitioner, she mentors teachers. Her teaching and research focus on mentoring teacher candidates and teachers. She currently serves on the board for the Colorado Middle Level Association. Karen has served as a trustee for the Association of Middle Level Education. She has also served as the editor of the Research in Middle Level Online Journal and chaired the Research in Middle Level committee. Karen has been a faculty at the University of Denver in the Office of Teaching and Learning. She was an Associate Professor at Mercer University in Atlanta where she served as the director of the PhD program in Curriculum and Instruction as well as the site chair of four Regional Academic Centers. While at George Mason University she taught in the Initiatives in Educational Transformation master’s program for teachers.

    Karen has been teaching for 36 years. She has an Ed.D.  in Curriculum and Instruction, and MEd in Secondary Education and a BS in Biology all from Northern Arizona University.   


    Dr. Micki Caskey is professor emerita in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction in the College of Education at Portland State University. Her research and specialization areas include middle grades education, teacher education, mentoring, doctoral education, and academic writing. She engages in and benefits from mutual mentoring relationships with practitioners (teachers and principals), academics (tenure-line/tenured and fixed-term faculty), and doctoral students.  

    Micki is the co-series editor of The Handbook of Research in Middle Level Education and The Handbook of Resources in Middle Level Education, past executive advisor and chair of the MLER SIG, past chair of the Association for Middle Level Education’s Research Advisory Committee, and former editor of Research in Middle Level Education Online. She has experience as an associate dean for academic affairs, doctoral program director, writing coach, teacher educator, and middle school teacher. She is the author of multiple books and numerous peer-reviewed publications; she also continues to share her ideas at national and international conferences.
